Characteristics
It is likely that your problem is with Brown Rats, they are an incredibly adaptable mammal and can be found almost everywhere in the UK, in any habitat, all it needs is shelter and food. Brown rats are omnivorous, eating pretty much anything, from fruit and seeds to human food waste, insects, birds’ eggs or even small mammals.
They need to be prevented in the early stages as they are famously good breeders; a female brown rat can breed from around 3 months old, and has an average of five litters a year, each of up to 12 young.
They live in live in loose colonies and dig their own burrows, most premises engage with their first rat on his forage for a new food supply. Often they get trapped in premises and cant find their way out.
History
Brown rats originated in south-east Asia but have spread throughout the world. They are frequently found living in cellars and in old sewers in the UK and elsewhere, and they can be a threat to public health. Occasionally brown rats will colonise river banks, and they are good swimmers. They dig burrows, breed all through the year, and are extremely prolific, having up to five litters per year.
